The Denver Nuggets were looking to make some deals at the trade deadline. They ended up sending Timofey Mozgov to the Cleveland Cavaliers before the deadline and they sent Arron Afflalo to the Portland Trail Blazers, but there were also rumors that they were looking to trade Ty Lawson. The fact is is that they did want to trade Ty, but they did not want to just get rid of him. The Nuggets were looking to get a steal not a deal. Zach Lowe of Grantland reports,
The Nuggets discussed Lawson deals at the deadline, and sources at the time said Denver wanted multiple first-round picks.
This is a little bit to much for Ty Lawson, but the Nuggets would still be able to get good picks for him. Lawson is a good point guard, but there are plenty of great point guards in the NBA, and if a team wanted one they could get a better deal on someone just as good or better than Lawson.
Lowe mentions, in the context of a Jazz trade, offering the Nuggets a first round pick along with two second rounders and Rodney Hood. If the Nuggets do end up getting rid of Ty this offseason, which they easily could, then they will probably want a first round pick in return for him and a few more assets. Lawson would be a good fit in any system that is looking for an uptempo young point guard, as he is very fast and great in the break.
If Lawson were to be sent out, the Nuggets will likely start building around their young, athletic power forward, Kenneth Faried. Kenneth may not be a star, but he plays hard and with a ton of intensity. They will also be able to use their small forward, Danilo Galinari who and is a great shooter that can score in bunches in different ways. Kenneth and Danilo Galinari would be good, young starting pieces for the Nuggets to build a contending team around.
