2019 has been the year of the reboot. Sure, a lot of years over the last decade or so could claim that title. But, thanks to the impending streaming wars of the 2020s, companies are pulling out all the stops to topple Netflix and take the streaming crown. So, that means cult hits and fan favorites are being revived left and right as the companies try to entice customers to their services. Gossip Girl is rebooting on HBO Max, Disney is reportedly eyeing a Home Alone redux, and Face/Off is even getting a facelift over at Paramount.
One franchise that won’t be getting the reboot treatment though is Friends. Last month, the show’s creators were staunchly opposed during an appearance on the Tribeca TV Fest stage. Then, on Monday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show Jennifer Aniston echoed their refusal to reboot. However, she did share a juicy hint that something could be in the pipeline. Aniston outright denied a reboot with a simple “no.” But, she did go on to reveal that the actors in the show “would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”
Exactly what that elusive “something” is though, has yet to be revealed. Maybe a reunion special, maybe an epilogue episode, hell, maybe even a ‘Where Are They Now…’ mockumentary about the six friends. We’ll just have to wait and see. Until then, if you’re feeling nostalgic you can still catch Friends on Netflix in its entirety. But, due to that $425 million exclusivity deal, it’ll be heading to HBO Max sometime in early 2020.
