As each day goes on and with each move Nicki Minaj makes, the Trinidad-born rapper continues to changes the landscape of just what it means to be a female in Hip-Hop. 3 albums in and a rapidly growing empire, Nicki Minaj is making it known that she can and will be respected just as much as her male counterparts. In less than a year, the singer has released her latest studio album, The Pinkprint, embarked on a world tour, landed a new television show with ABC, and so much more. Covering and sitting down for an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Minaj addresses a flurry of topics and speaks on her true feelings regarding Miley Cyrus’s critique of her issues with the VMAs and the celebration of black women.
A month later, the episode was still bothering Minaj. Addressing Cyrus, she told me: ‘‘The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls. You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.’’
And of course, Nicki finally reveals how she feels about two people close to her, Drake and Meek Mill, and their publicized beef.
It was getting dark outside when I asked about Drake, Meek, Wayne and Williams. Minaj hadn’t turned on lights, so she was in shadow. ‘‘They’re men, grown-ass men,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s between them.’’ How does it make you feel, I ask? ‘‘I hate it,’’ she said. ‘‘It doesn’t make me feel good. You don’t ever want to choose sides between people you love. It’s ridiculous. I just want it to be over.’’
If it wasn’t evident before, it’s more than clear now that Nicki Minaj is in the driver’s seat in regards to every aspect of her career. With The Pinkprint era finally dwindling down, who knows what’s next for Nicki Minaj. If her track record is anything to go by, there’s plenty of surprises on the horizon.
