A professional football franchise could be coming to a city near you. Pro Football Talk‘s Mike Florio has reported that high ranking officials within the NFL are discussing expanding the league to 40 teams.
“The conversations about possibly growing to 40 teams already are happening, at the highest levels of the league. It will take time to get there, but in time it will happen. The money will make it so,” Florio wrote in a piece titled, “Expansion to 40 teams isn’t as crazy as it sounds.”
“So where would the teams be headquartered? Obviously, St. Louis. London, which has two NFL-ready stadiums, would have two (like L.A.). And then it would be time to find five other domestic markets.”
The Houston Texans were last team added into the NFL in 2002. Since then, a number of teams like the Raiders and Rams have moved. Also, Washington has changed its name. However, discussions of expansion have not come to the forefront in an official capacity. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not commented on the matter of expansion in recent months, but it still remains a possibility considering the league’s continued fascination with London.
If/when (when), the NFL expands from 32 teams, the natural ending point is 40. https://t.co/WwWnoQN154
