There is a lot going on in the nation’s capital. While many are watching the initial impeachment inquiry regarding President Joe Biden, local authorities have their eyes locked on Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s office. On Thursday, September 28, a group of more than 150 protesters were appeared outside of the congressman’s office. According to a report from The Hill, the protesters organized in hopes of persuading McCarthy to “support bridge funding to keep the government open, including funding FEMA to respond to climate disasters.” Ultimately, Capitol Police arrested at least 18 of the protesters.
“Today showed that the GOP is nothing but a group of cowards,” Adah Crandall of the Sunrise Movement said after arrests were made.
“They chose to arrest a bunch of teenagers instead of facing us. They would rather shut down the government than do their jobs and protect our generation. Our generation is watching and we will hold them accountable for their actions.”
This is not the first time that McCarthy’s office has been the site of the protest. Not long ago, a protest regarding funding for HIV and AIDS programs took place at the lawmaker’s office. Similarly, protesters were arrested by Capitol Police.
“This morning, people started demonstrating inside the Rayburn House Office Building, which is not allowed in Congressional Buildings,” a statement from the Capitol Police reads.
“After multiple warnings, the demonstrators refused to stop illegally demonstrating.”
