Let the Streaming Wars begin. According to IndieWire, NBCUniveral’s upcoming streaming app will be launching sometime in April 2020. Comcast made the announcement Thursday during a Q2 earnings call.
NBC’s untitled platform will reportedly be ad-supported and free for anyone who already pays for a cable subscription that gives them access to NBC. For anyone else looking to check out the app, it’ll cost you. However, unfortunately, we don’t know how much it’ll cost you quite yet. We actually don’t know much other than the release window of April 2020.
When it does launch though, we know NBC’s app will be the exclusive home to The Office and season 3 of A.P. Bio. It will likely feature a number of other exclusive programs and original series but again, those have yet to be announced.
The app will certainly have some competition as at least two other streaming services are launching between then and now. WarnerMedia’s got HBO Max hitting sometime in the spring of 2020. Before that, Disney’s hitting the streaming market with Disney+ in November. Oh, and Apple’s got a streaming service in the pipeline that’ll likely land before the end of 2020.
So, with all this on the horizon and the fact that Netflix just lost subscribers in the U.S. for the first time in nearly a decade, it seems like we’re in for quite the streaming showdown next year.
