Not so ‘smart’ of a move by the rookie point guard from the Boston Celtics. Marcus Smart was trying to fight through a hard San Antonio Spurs screen and when he came off it, he wound up punching Spurs reserve center Matt Bonner right in the groin. Smart was ejected for his action.
It seemed like it might not have been done with purpose but Smart says it was a ‘freak accident’ according to ESPN.
Either way, whether you think it was purposely done or just an accidental move, Smart will pay for it.
Following from an official NBA press release
Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has been suspended one game without pay for hitting San Antonio Spurs center/forward Matt Bonner in the groin, it was announced today by Rod Thorn, President, Basketball Operations.
The incident, which resulted in a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejection for Smart, occurred last night with 8:56 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Celtics’ 101-89 loss to the Spurs at AT&T Center.
Smart will serve his suspension tomorrow when the Celtics host the Detroit Pistons.
Not a good thing for the Celtics to have go against them as they continue to fight for the playoffs. Smart has been one of the bright stars for the Celtics this season and without him, it’s going to be hard defending the Pistons back court of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Reggie Jackson, who’s coming off a 20 point, 20 assist game.
