On Saturday evening, all eyes will be set on the ring inside T-Mobile Arena as Ryan Garcia challenges WBA “Regular” Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. While everyone in attendance will be waiting eagerly to see the main event, fans will also have the chance to see another champion in action. David Morrell Jr., who holds a version of the WBA Super Middleweight Championship, will face off against Brazilian veteran Yamaguchi Falcao. If Morrell Jr. emerges with the win on Saturday night, he has his sights set on another super middleweight contender by the name of David Benavidez.
“Right now, I’m [completely] focused on this fight,” Morell Jr. told Boxing Scene.
“This is a big opportunity. I’m focused on my opponent. I’m focused on the fight. That’s it. If I’m the winner of this fight, I’m focused a hundred percent on David Benavidez. I wanna fight him. I think he’ll wanna fight me, so let’s get it. No more excuses, no more nothing. Let’s fight.”
Benavidez beat former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant by unanimous decision in March. As a result, he is one of many mandatory challengers for the super middleweight title held by Canelo Alvarez. However, Alvarez is set to fight John Ryder on May 6 and is expected to fight Dmitry Bivol in September. Unless Alvarez decides to fight for a third time in 2023, Benavidez and Morrell would have to wait until 2024 to get a shot at the title. In the meantime, the two men could fight each other or wait until they get a shot at the full world title.
