Missy Elliott has provided the Atlanta Chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association with $20,000 for a new, current-use scholarship. The donation will be used to cover a student’s tuition and board.
“We have embarked on a 12-month effort to raise funds for students who are unable to get their tuition and other fees covered. We call it our Gap Funding scholarship,” National Hampton Alumni Association President Willie Williams said.
“Without help from generous donors, our students would be unable to remain at Hampton and; therefore, in many cases, would be unable to complete their college education. We will be forever grateful to Ms. Elliott and her foundation for their support.”
In addition to donating $20,000 to an HBCU in her home state, Missy Elliott’s hometown voted to rename a street in her honor. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also declared October 17 as Missy Elliott day.
“As a native Virginian, she has inspired young women in the Commonwealth and beyond to pursue careers in the arts and music,” Youngkin said, according to WAVY.
“She is the American dream!”
