The office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith is set to lead the prosecution against Kim Potter. Potter is facing charges of second-degree manslaughter after she shot and killed an unarmed young, Black man by the name of Daunte Wright on April 11 in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
“Daunte Wright’s death was a tragedy. He should not have died on the day that he did. He should not have died the way that he did,” Ellison stated.
Ellison will offer assistance for his case when needed, but his colleague, Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank, will supervise the case. Frank is best known as one of the trial attorneys who participated in the case against convicted murderer Derek Chauvin. Moving forward, Frank, Ellison and other legal professionals will begin reviewing evidence and the charges levied against Potter.
“I did not seek this prosecution and do not accept it lightly,” Ellison added.
“I have had, and continue to have, confidence in how both County Attorney Orput and County Attorney Freeman have handled this case to date. Prosecutors are ministers of justice. This means we must and will follow justice wherever it leads.”
Potter’s trial has been set for December 6, 2021.
