Michael Jordan has famously always been the type to keep his mouth shut when it comes to major issues in the world. He’s never been one to stick his nose into any business outside of basketball and he’s always been relatively quiet. That is until recently, when acts of racial injustice have started dominate the headlines in the United States.
One recent tragedy has hit close to home for Jordan and the Hornets. Keith Scott was shot and killed by police in Charlotte, North Carolina. There is no video yet of the incident and it’s unlikely that one will come out. There has been a lot of outrage at the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, on Tuesday and more over the bodycam video not being released. What has followed so far is two nights of protests in the city’s central neighborhood, which turned violent in places including one person being shot.
Now, after two nights of protests, which includes a Hornets team store being looted, Michael Jordan is pleading with the city of Charlotte. End the violence, work together and find a solution to these horrible crimes in a peaceful manner.
Jordan made the following statement, courtesy of the Hornets website.
“First, I want to express my condolences to the Scott family for their loss. I also wish for a full recovery to those who have been injured.
“In light of the tragic events of the past three days, it is more important than ever that we restore calm and come together, as a community, in peaceful demonstration and conversation, and in constructive and non-violent ways. As part of the fabric of Charlotte, the Hornets organization is committed to working with civic leaders, our elected leaders and law enforcement to foster more trust, transparency and understanding so we can heal and grow together as a community.”
