Nearly two years to the day that Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down in Brunswick, Georgia, the three men who killed were punished in the court of law. After the trio was convicted of felony murder in November, the trio received the following prison sentences:
- Greg McMichael: Life Without The Possibility Of Parole + 20 Years In Prison
- Travis McMichael: Life Without The Possibility Of Parole + 20 Years In Prison
- William “Roddy” Bryan: Life With The Possibility Of Parole
Today’s sentencing hearing closes another chapter in the fallout that followed Arbery’s death. The Georgia resident was jogging through a neighborhood in Glynn County, Georgia on February 23, 2020 when he was chased and gunned down by the three defendants. While each member of the trio played a part in the death of an unarmed men, the McMichaels and Bryan went home without being arrested. It appears that no member of the trio was going to face criminal charges until a video of Arbery’s death surfaced both in public media and social media. In the midst of nationwide public outrage, authorities charged all three men before they were convicted in November 2021.
“When I close my eyes I see his execution in my mind, over and over, and I’ll see that for the rest of my life,” Arbery’s father, Marcus, said.
“The man who killed my son has sat in this courtroom every single day next to his father. I’ll never get that chance, to sit next to my son, ever again.”
All three men are expected to appear in court again in February. The McMichaels and Bryan face several federal hate crime charges connected to Arbery’s death.
