New York Mayor Eric Adams has reportedly appointed his younger brother, Bernard Adams, as the city police department’s deputy commissioner of governmental affairs. Thus far, Adams’ office has not confirmed nor denied the reporting put forth by several local media outlets.
Prior to serving as NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Governmental Affairs, Adams worked as a sergeant in the New York Police Department. After retiring from the police force, NBC 4 New York reports that he worked as the assistant director of operations for parking and transportation at Virginia Commonwealth University’s MCV campus.
Aside from appointing Bernard Adams, the mayor also appointed Phillip Banks as the deputy mayor for public safety.
“I need a partner in government who understands what it takes to keep New Yorkers safe,” Adams said in a press statement.
“Phil Banks is that person, and I am grateful for his continued public service in this new role to help our administration deliver the safety we need and the justice we deserve.”
Banks is the former NYPD chief of department and close friend of the mayor. However, his time with the police force was put into question when he was named by the federal government as “an unindicted co-conspirator” in an NYPD corruption scheme. Despite claims made by the federal government, Banks has maintained his innocence.
“I was never charged with any crime as part of that investigation, which is why I never felt it necessary to address the reports,” Banks wrote in an op-ed.
