Steve Nash has been a hot commodity since he announced his retirement from the NBA a few months ago. When he decided to hangup his sneakers and step away from the game, the former 2-time MVP elected to help out his most recent team, the Los Angeles Lakers, with their player development in particular for young guards Jordan Clarkson and D’Angelo Russell.
Now Nash is taking a role with the reigning NBA Champion Golden State Warriors as a part-time player consultant, as if their staff wasn’t already full of great people.
But despite Nash retiring and his recent horrible injury issues that essentially forced him to hang it up, it appears one of his former teams were looking into bringing him back. The Dallas Mavericks, who struck out big this offseason in trying to land DeAndre Jordan, were interested in possibly bringing Nash back as a player in spot situations.
Following from Marc Stein of ESPN.com.
Sources said as recently as late June — when Nash played in longtime teammate Dirk Nowitzki’s annual charity baseball game — the Dallas Mavericks were still hoping to lobby Nash to consider unretiring and reuniting with Nowitzki as a spot-duty point guard for the coming season.
Nash was also reportedly garnering interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers back in March but in both cases, Nash didn’t budge. He’s remaining retired.
The Mavs made the best out of a bad situation when they lost Rajon Rondo and Tyson Chandler in free agency and missed out on Jordan. They brought in troubled point guard Deron Williams and some solid pieces in an attempt to keep the team afloat with aging superstar Dirk Nowitzki still fighting for another title.
The chances of the Mavs winning the NBA Championship next season might not be great even if they did add Nash as a part-time point guard. It still would’ve been a nice final farewell for the dynamic duo that performed so well together in the early 2000’s teaming up for one final run.
