Actor Matthew McConaughey wasn’t spending time on a Hollywood set this past weekend. Instead, he traveled up to Salt Lake City, Utah for the National Governors Association 2024 Summer Meeting. While spending time with state lawmakers from around the country, he spoke openly about the possibility of running for governor.
“I’m on a learning tour and have been for probably the last six years,” the actor told New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
“Do I have the instincts and intellect that it would be a good fit for me and I would be a good for it. You know, would I be useful?”
McConaughey didn’t firmly commit to running, but his potential colleagues urged him to give it a shot.
“Don’t fall into the trap to think you should be just one thing,” Hawaii Governor Josh Green said.
“A lot of Republicans will want you to be Republican and a lot of Democrats will want you to be a Democrat, just be you because that might be something special for all of us.”
Either way, politics will be a part of McConaughey will be a part of his life. During the meeting, he said that political division was driving division within Hollywood.
“My industry has to watch its tongue out of the gate because it’s coming from the left,” he said.
“We have to open that conversation with our opening statements and not invalidate a moderate or conservative at the gate, which we’re guilty of to an extent.”
In the meantime, McConaughey will move forward with several of his acting commitments. According to IMDb, he is attached to four upcoming projects, including a thriller called The Lost Bus with America Ferrera and The Rivals of Amziah King with Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse.
