The UMass Minutemen season isn’t over but they have announced that they will not retain Head Coach Matt McCall. It was also announced that he will coach out the remaining of the season for the Minutemen. Typically moves like this happen after the season has ended, but UMass likely wants to start their coaching search as early as possible. The NCAA coaching carousel is always a hectic time of the year. UMass has two regular-season games left before the start of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
UMass has made the decision to part ways with head coach Matt McCall after five seasons, sources told me and @PeteThamel. McCall will coach against Fordham tomorrow and, at this point, is expected to finish out the season. Minutemen currently 12-16 overall, 5-11 in the A-10.

The UMass Minutemen are typically a fairly talented mid-major program, but this year they are near the bottom of the Atlantic 10. Matt McCall’s tenure with the program has been rocky, to say the least. He currently holds a 28-53 conference record and a 58-81 record overall. Seeing that alone it becomes obvious why the program felt that it was time to make a change. McCall was fairly successful as the Head Coach of Chattanooga and even made the NCAA Tournament once in two years.
UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford had the following to say: “Matt poured himself into this role and has been a great teammate and partner as we worked to build a championship program. Unfortunately, we have not met the results we desire on the court and I believe a change at the end of the season is in the best interest of the program,” I am grateful that Matt and I shared a mutual desire to have him finish the 2021-2022 campaign with the men in our program over the coming weeks.”
