One of the long-standing runs in the NBA is coming to an end. After a 10-year tenure in San Antonio, Matt Bonner will likely not be returning to the Spurs.
Bonner appeared on Concord News Radio to speak about his future with the Spurs. The big man did not seem optimistic that he would be returning to the team (transcribed by NBC News 4, h/t CBS Sports):
“Currently they haven’t signed me.” Bonner said “Unless something changes going into the season, I’m probably not going to be with the Spurs.”
Bonner has spent 10 of his 12 years in the league with the Spurs. Though he does not often get playing time, Bonner was always a secret weapon off the bench. His size and shooting ability created mismatches against the right lineups.
But the Spurs wanted to make getting younger and more athletic a priority this offseason. That has not happened significantly with Pau Gasol replacing Tim Duncan. Perhaps Bonner’s roster spot will go to someone who can provide those attributes.
As for Bonner, he will certainly have some suitors. Though the 36-year-old does not provide many things, his shooting at either the power forward or center position is valuable. A playoff contender, especially, could use the spacing that Matt Bonner can provide.
