Maryland guard Varun Ram may be known best for his game winning steal in Maryland’s NCAA tournament victory over Valparaiso, but now, he’s using his time to give back to the community in India. For two weeks, Ram will be taking some time off of summer workouts at the University of Maryland to volunteer at a camp geared towards less fortunate families.
Following From Washington Post.
“It’s a two-week after-school camp for kids. A lot of them come from very poor families, where their parents are working two or three jobs and might not always be around. These kids don’t have opportunities outside of school to be involved in this sort of activity,” said Ram, who grew up in Clarksville and graduated from River Hill. “There’s not really a big emphasis in India in sports. The idea hasn’t really hit them yet, that you learn so many things from sports.”
Ram may not be the biggest name or most idolized player in a country that focuses so little on sports like India does, but he is definitely going to make a change in all of these kids lives. Through the camp and volunteering, the Maryland guard will be making a difference away from home.
Once the camp is complete, Ram will make his way back to Maryland to continue summer workouts with the rest of the team. Maryland could be competing for a championship this season, and Ram could have another opportunity to make a big play that could be a game-changer.
