Congresswoman Mary Miller was joined by former President Donald Trump during a recent campaign stop in Mendon, Illinois. While addressing her constituents, the congresswoman from Illinois openly celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Miller is far from the only conservative congresswoman to celebrate the decision, but her comments took things a step further than most.
“President Trump, on behalf of all the MAGA patriots in America, I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court yesterday,” she told voters ahead of Tuesday’s congressional primary.
The crowd seemingly cheered as Miller made the comment. However, a spokesperson quickly walked back the lawmaker’s statement, calling it a “mix-up of words.”
“You can clearly see in the video … she’s looking at her papers and looking at her speech,” Miller’s spokesperson, Isaiah Wartman, said.
This is not the first time that Miller has had to walk back public comments. In 2020, she was widely criticized for her decision to reference Adolf Hitler during a campaign speech.
“Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ’Whoever has the youth has the future,’” she said, according to WCIA-TV.
Miller’s most recent comments have drawn backlash from a wide range of critics, including Jemele Hill.
“Even if you were foolish enough to believe Rep Mary Miller accidentally slipped up, peep the crowd and former president’s reaction. Just awful human beings,” Hill tweeted.
“As to Rep. Mary Miller and the right-wing gaslighting attempt to walk her white life comment back, I’m reminded of what the great Maya Angelou once told us: When people show you who they are believe them the first time,” congressional candidate Shuwaski Young added.
In the midst of her most recent controversy, Miller will run a favorite during Tuesday’s primary elections in Illinois’ 15th Congressional District.
