Incarcerated since last November for violating his strict probation, rapper Robert Williams better known by stage name Meek Mill has had Philadelphia’s support since the beginning.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Williams and the city share a close bond and that directly carries over to the sports teams. The rapper inspired a Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl run and now Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin has a similar idea. According to TMZ, Rubin organized for Sixers rookies Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz to visit Meek Mill in prison.
Meek Mill got some surprise visitors in prison this week — Philadelphia 76ers stars Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons … TMZ Sports has learned.
We’re told 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin organized the visit … hoping Meek could provide some inspiration for the rookie stars so they can make a push for the NBA playoffs. Rubin’s been a huge supporter of Meek while he’s been locked up, visiting often and bringing along other players, like Joel Embiid.
One source with knowledge of the situation tells us … “the conversation was very positive and Meek’s spirits are still high. He is also proud of the 76ers.”
Meek also dished out some “words of wisdom” for the guys.
Since his arrest, many have called for Meek Mill’s freedom as he’s widely believed to be unjustly confined with a current sentence of 2-4 years.
Michael Rubin himself has been a major proponent of the rapper’s freedom and likely hopes he can serve as motivation ahead of the Sixers’ first playoff appearance in the past six years.
Both Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz will be major factors in any possible postseason push the Sixers may make. The latter of the two just returned from a complex shoulder issue so it remains to be seen the impact Fultz will have in the playoffs.
