Marc Gasol will not be joining the Spanish National Team in Rio, according to Eurohoops. Gasol has been a fixture for Spain in the last two Olympics as well as in several European and world championships.
Gasol suffered an injury during the NBA season and it appears that that’s what is keeping him away from Rio. Gasol’s foot injury has placed many questions on his future. He had previously claimed he wanted to join his national team, but his availability was always in question. With Gasol’s professional career at risk, playing it cautious would be the smart move.
Spain has often been the biggest competition for Team USA in international tournaments, routinely finishing second. They will still have Pau Gasol after he committed to the team. But without his brother Marc, Spain will find it very difficult to pull off an upset. In fact, they may no longer be the favorites for the silver medal.
Marc Gasol missing the Olympics is obviously a huge blow for Spain. However, it may have some benefits for Gasol and the Grizzlies. The extra rest will hopefully allow him to return to the court for the NBA season fully healthy.
