The Memphis Grizzlies are a bit of an enigma entering the 2016-17 season. They objectively have a lot of talent at the top of their team. However, a lack of depth issues compounded with the risk of injury make them a possible candidate for a disappointment.
Among the most important factors separating success and failure for the Grizzlies is Marc Gasol’s health. The center missed the second half of the season and the playoffs with a foot injury. That particular injury is especially worrisome for a big man as it has often led to careers ending sooner than expected.
But it appears that Gasol is recovering well from his injury. In an interview with L’Esportiu (translated by Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype), Gasol reveals that he has resumed practicing in half-court sets:
“I’m really well and looking forward to starting (the season). I miss the competition, playing and enjoying basketball. All indications are that the foot is fine. I’ve practiced with the (Girona basketball club) juniors all I could, especially half-court sets.”
On almost making it to the Olympic Games:
“I was a couple of weeks away.”
This is great news. That Gasol was somewhat close to returning in time for the Olympics is a surprise. He is already practicing and getting his conditioning back which is a good sign for his future.
Marc Gasol will likely be able to join the Grizzlies for opening night. The only question that remains is whether he will be able to stay healthy throughout the year.
