Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol has changed his representation to Octagon according to Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal. Gasol’s agent will be Alex Saratsis. The big man was previously represented by Wasserman.
Last summer, Gasol negotiated a near max contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, keeping him in Memphis for the next four years, barring a trade. The Spaniard has not played elsewhere in the NBA.
This next season will be an unknown for Gasol. The big man broke his foot last season, causing him to miss the team’s hard-fought effort to reach the playoffs before being eliminated by the Spurs. The injury is a particularly scary one for someone of Gasol’s size and stature, as many notable big men have lost their careers due to recurring foot injuries.
It is unclear why Gasol is switching his representation at this point in his career. Now 31 years old, the center has likely signed the last huge deal in his career. In four years, if he is healthy, it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to negotiate a large deal regardless of who his agent is.
Nevertheless, Marc Gasol likely did what he thought was best for his financial situation, including off-court opportunities.
