The Orlando Magic fired former head coach Jacque Vaughn back in February and have been without a head coach since. They’re currently at a stand still with their coaching search waiting for the one guy they’ve been linked to since the regular season came to a close Tom Thibodeau.
Tom Thibodeau and The Bulls relationship is beyond repair and has been for quite some time that’s no secret. The Magic are now rumored to be willing to give The Bulls draft picks as compensation obviously nothing 1st round considering Thibodeau will be gone either way.
Sources close to the situation say not only would the Magic give the Bulls compensation (likely a second-round pick or two) for the chance to get at Thibodeau, sources also said the Magic would meet the expected $7-8 million per year coaching salary Thibodeau likely commands in his next deal.-Steve Kyler of NBA Insiders
Trading draft picks for coaches must be the new way to go since The Nets received picks for Jason Kidd from The Bucks and The Clippers traded picks to get Doc Rivers from Boston.
Thibodeau could take the Orlando job he starts with a young roster that he can help build and they’ll be able to handle the workload Thibodeau gives his players. Which is one of the reasons why The Bulls want him gone since they’ve questioned his minutes his players do get at times.
Thibodeau will more than likely be one of the most sought after coaching candidates in the off-season with only a few openings right now I can see The Magic beating other teams out based on young roster and location.
It would be a huge upgrade and a steal if The Magic do get Thibodeau, but like anything it will come at a price.
In the long run though that price will be worth it since Thibs has been successful with a 255-139 record as a head coach. Another team that will talk to Thibodeau is The New Orleans Pelicans, and the one thing that would convince him to go for that job is Anthony Davis.
The Pelicans have a nice roster that’s already constructed and excellent defensive anchors in Davis and former Chicago Bull Omer Asik. The Pelicans roster seems like a good opportunity with an already constructed roster, but it all depends on how much say so over the final roster decisions he will get.
