On Tuesday, July 23, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his intention to wait until “mid-August” to name a new Prime Minister.
“Of course we need to be concentrated on the Games until mid-August,” Macron told France 2.
“From then… it will be my responsibility to name a prime minister and entrust them with the task of forming a government, with the broadest backing possible.”
The last month has been less than stellar for Macron and his colleagues. Earlier this year, he surprised the voters by removing the parliament and holding snap elections. On Sunday, July 7, a second-round of voting produced a lower-house National Assembly, but not a clear majority. As of now, the NFP alliance holds 193 seats, the centrists have 164 and the National Rally has 143. As a result, the National Assembly and the French government has a bit of uncertainty.
“The question is what majority can emerge from the Assembly so that a French government can pass reforms, pass a budget and move the country forward?” Macron asked.
In the meantime, Macron and the French will turn their attention to the Summer Olympics. The opening ceremony is set to take place on Friday, July 26 in Paris at Jardins du Trocadéro.
