Lizzo has formally established the “Sasha Be Flooting” Music Scholarship Fund at the University of Houston. The scholarship fund will provide financial support for a Black student pursuing a degree in music.
“We are excited to be working with Lizzo and her team to establish the Sasha Be Flooting Music Scholarship within the UH Alumni Association Foundation,” the University of Houston stated.
“We are deeply grateful to Lizzo for her generosity and commitment to supporting the next generation of music students. This scholarship will be life-changing for one young artist — it will create opportunities and open doors that will impact the student and their journey toward a music career.”
In addition to supporting the study of music, Lizzo also donated $50,000 to a variety of philanthropic organizations, including Marsha P. Johnson Institute, Black Girls Smile and the Sphinx Organization. Each philanthropic donation was made in conjunction with her fourth annual Juneteenth giveback.
“Today is very close to my heart, near and dear to home and a milestone for me,” Lizzo told her fans.
“That was me just a couple of years ago, a young Black flute player who just needed a scholarship and someone to believe in them. Now I get to pay it forward.”
