Apparently, Jim Caldwell signed a contract extension months ago, it just so happened to be reported by the media months later. The Lions are off to a 2-0 start to their season as their head coach was rewarded with a contract extension. Well, at least knowledge of the extension took place following the 2-0 start. Since 2014 when Caldwell joined the Lions, he has a record of 29-21.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the (old) news:
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Lions, a league source tells ESPN.

Jim Caldwell’s multi-year deal was signed months ago, just not disclosed, per source. Deal silences speculation he was in last year of deal.

Caldwell has made the playoffs twice in his Lions tenure which likely earned the extension. Caldwell led the Lions to a playoff trip a year ago but has failed to win a playoff game in Detroit. The best Caldwell was in Indy when Peyton Manning was at the helm to a Super Bowl win. The Lions now have their core in place after paying Matthew Stafford a mega-contract.
