There has been speculation of Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James teaming up for years now (shout out to #TeamBananaBoat). But with every season that Melo struggles with a Knicks team unable to win, the rumors become louder.
Most recently, there has been (very) minor rumblings about Melo teaming up with LeBron on the Cavs to chase his first NBA championship.
Naturally, LeBron was asked if the two had discussed such a move, and naturally he gave a very vague response.
Following via Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com:
“We have a lot of conversations,” James said Tuesday of his relationship with Anthony.
Did any of those talks center on Anthony coming to Cleveland?
“Maybe. Maybe not,” James said.
Well that sure clears the air.
The logistics to get Melo on the Knicks is difficult. The Cavs are too cap-strapped to sign him outright if he, say, reaches a buy-out agreement with the Knicks (unless he takes the vet minimum). A buy-out is altogether unrealistic, anyway.
In order to make one-half of a banana boat happen in Cleveland, a trade would have to occur. It would likely hinge on the Knicks’ approval for taking on Kevin Love, despite already having Kristaps Porzingis – another shooting big man – on the roster. This is all assuming that Anthony would want to leave his own super team.
Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Probably not. But then again, where LeBron James has a will, there’s a way.
