“I don’t know if I ever want to be a head coach again after this year,” Drew told The Athletic.
Larry Drew was the only coach in the Cavaliers’ organization at the time of Lue’s firing that had head coaching experience of any sort. He was the obvious choice for interim, but initially balked at the opportunity not knowing if it was for him. Eventually Drew was able to leverage his unique circumstances into a further financial commitment from the Cavaliers extending into next season which solidified him as the coach for the remainder of the year.
Under Drew’s leadership the Cavs have posted an abysmal record. While the winning percentage is certainly better than Lue’s 0-6, the Cavaliers are at the bottom of the standings with little to no hope of climbing out. Drew can hardly be blamed with the lack of talent on the roster after the departures of Kyrie Irving and LeBron James over the past two season and considering the injury to Kevin Love. With the stars out of the picture, the Cavs rely heavily on the play of rookies and two-way players in order to stay afloat.
Drew may be burnt out on coaching, but the Cavalier will need him to remain focused to avoid an end to the year that could be somehow even more embarrassing than the beginning.
