If you have been paying attention to the pop scene for the last two months then you might have come across, Lana Del Rey. She has been buzzed about for the past two months now. Get familiar below.
I chose not to play ‘follow the leader’ and opted to discover Rey on my own time. So is she worthy of all the buzz that she is currently receiving? I would believe so. But what exactly is so appealing about the white girl with the big lips ? After listening to Rey’s self titled EP it would definitely have to be her SOUND, which can be described as moody-pop. That is exactly what makes Rey stand-out right now. The classic Born To Die could have easily been given the David Guetta/Calvin Harris production which would have resulted in a genre of music (electro-pop) which has become saturated and quite frankly annoying over the past two years.
Rey rather opts to standout. Singing in a low-toned voice over addictive melancholic beats is exactly what makes her unique right now. In Video Games, the lead single from her upcoming album entitled, “Born To Die” Rey opens her self up and explores one of her past relationships which brought her happiness but also tears because her lover was always playing ‘video games’. Sounds like a joke but listen to it below and you will find that the song has a deeper meaning than its title suggests.
Born To Die is the follow-up to ‘Games’ and this is where Rey’s artistry comes out. Although its title could be mistaken as just another bad song on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way effort, Born To Die is actually a love song but not one with happy connotations. ‘Born’ rather explores the tenebrous side of love. The song creates the same 60’s atmosphere as its predecessor, ‘Games’, which Rey has been praised for.
Watching the above two visuals it is obvious that Lana Del Rey has introduced a new wave of pop-music to the world. People have argued that this ‘sound’ has been around in the indie-pop scene for a long time now and even before Rey rose to prominence. A fair argument…but should Rey not be given credit for taking this ‘sound’ into the mainstream?
Lana Del Rey will release her much-anticipated album effort, Born To Die, on January 30th. Preview her EP here.
