When you’re the Los Angeles Lakers in their current state, there are many options this upcoming offseason. They only have one position locked in on their roster at the starting shooting guard in Kobe Bryant. Beyond that, everything could be on the table for LA.
They need a legit point guard, a big man who can score or rim protect and some bench players as well. Luckily for the Lakers, they landed at the second overall spot in the 2015 NBA Draft lottery and they are looking at all of their options. They’ve all but eliminated the top 2 big men in Jahlil Okafor and Karl Anthony-Towns and have started leaning towards guards D’Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay. Laker GM Mitch Kupchak realizes a lot that will happen in the draft could rely on their pick. LA looks to have some options in this draft and teams after them are waiting for the Lakers to make a choice and it could affect the progress of the NBA for years to come.
Following from Mike Trudell of Lakers.com.
Kupchak said anywhere from four to eight players could be in consideration for the No. 2 pick. Keeping options open and broad right now.
LAL want to be prepped to pick from 1 all the way to 60; could always make a trade or purchase a pick as they did for Clarkson last year.
Up to eight players possibly in play at the number 2 pick could mean the Lakers are insinuating they would like to trade down. So possibly even if they elect to swap picks with the New York Knicks at 4, they could get the guy they want. The Knicks want Towns and the Lakers want one of the guards. It more likely if they do swap to 4 that they get Mudiay since the Philadelphia 76ers are looking to take Russell with their pick at 3.
They can even get crafty and send their pick into the double digits but pull in some other pieces in the process. The power is in the Lakers hands at this point so whatever they do, hopefully, they won’t mess it up.
