In last night’s lottery changing loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, head coach of the Los Angels Lakers, Byron Scott might have coached his last game for the Lakers until next weekend.
Not for any selfish reasons of his own but coach Scott will be staying in California as the Lakers travel on a road trip due to attending his mother’s funeral.
Following from Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News and Inside The Lakers.
Lakers coach Byron Scott will stay in Southern California during the first part of the team’s five-gametrip this week both in Oklahoma City (Tuesday) and Minnesota (Wednesday) to attend the funeral of his mother, Dorothy. She passed away last Sunday at the age of 72.
Scott plans to rejoin on Thursday in time to coach games in Toronto (Friday), Brooklyn (Sunday) and Philadelphia (Monday). Lakers assistant coach Paul Pressey, will serve as the acting head coach during Scott’s absence.
Scott’s career saw him stay in the Los Angeles area, for the most part of his playing career. He was famously a member of the Lakers for a longtime and had success. He then went on to coach for a few teams and while this Lakers season is far from the success he’s used to in coaching but him with the Lakers just seemed right.
It also seemed like his mother was proud of him being in LA.
“She was telling me for years that it would happen,” said Scott, who played 11 of his 14 NBA seasons with the Showtime Lakers where he won three championships. “So she was a big basketball fan. She was really excited.”
We express our deepest condolences to coach Scott and his family.
