The term “sophomore slump” is often thrown around in the buildup to an artist’s second album, but that hasn’t truly applied to R&B acts in recent years. From SZA’s S.O.S and Summer Walker’s Still Over It to Giveon’s Beloved and Leon Thomas’s Mutt, many of the most dynamic acts in the genre have managed to avoid the feared sophomore slump. This Friday, August 22, 2025, one of R&B’s most promising emerging artists, Khamari, took his shot at fighting against the cursed sophomore slump.
Two years after releasing his breakout project, A Brief Nirvana, Khamari has returned with a sophomore project, To Dry A Tear. Led by the singles, “Head in a Jar,” “Sycamore Tree,” and “Lonely in the Jungle,” To Dry A Tear is an 11-track “pretty introspective” album about “trust, desire, fear, addiction.”
“‘Lonely in the Jungle’ and my first single ‘Head in a Jar’ are two parts of the same scene. It’s about being surrounded by so much yet still feeling alone,” he explained. “I was really inspired by what Jeff Buckley did so well – putting a certain alternative rock energy and musicality behind these soulful songs that were really blues in form and emotion.”
Now, the world can see all of the “soulful songs” that Khamari and company have been working on since the captured the world’s attention with A Brief Nirvana. Check out To Dry A Tear below.
