We’ve known for a while now that Kevin Garnett planned on signing a 2-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. What we didn’t know, however, is how much the deal would be worth. That is, until today.
From Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press:
AP Sources: Kevin Garnett's 2-year deal with the Timberwolves will be worth $16 million.

Before overreacting, it should be noted that the salary cap is increasing. However, even with the increase in the salary cap, $8 million a year is simply too much to pay a 39-year old. Garnett is a Hall-of-Famer, and I have an incredible deal of respect for him. I’m happy for him, but this just isn’t a smart move for the Timberwolves.
It’s very possible that Garnett doesn’t play out the second year of his contract though. He’ll be 40 next summer, and his body has got to be exhausted. That being said, you never know with the Big Ticket. He’s a warrior, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a fiercer competitor. Having Garnett on the roster will definitely be beneficial to the Timberwolves. They’re one of the youngest teams in the NBA, and KG can teach the kids some lessons. His mentorship will be especially beneficial to the young big men on the teams: Adreian Payne, Gorgui Dieng, Anthony Bennett, and rookie Karl-Anthony Towns.
When Garnett does retire, whether it be next year or the year after(it’s hard to imagine him playing past this contract), he is expected to take on a management position with the Timberwolves. Garnett is the greatest player the Wolves have ever had, and they’re lucky to have him on the team. However, a $16 million contract for a guy going into his 21st season is hard to justify.
