Marvel is no longer a heavyweight at the box office. The uber popular cinematic universe is now a titan in the streaming world. Over the last year and change, Marvel’s parent company, Disney, has rolled out a number of series through its streaming platform, Disney+. While WandaVision, Hawkeye and several other series have performed well, Marvel chief Kevin Feige seems particularly excited about the upcoming Moon Knight series. During a recent interview with Empire, he touched upon what fans can expect when the series debuts.
“There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’” he explained.
“We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing.”
Kevin Feige’s comments confirm much of what fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have said in the past few weeks. As one YouTube commenter put it, Moon Knight is “more of a mind trip than all of the other galactic chaos happening in the Marvel Multiverse.” Led by Issac Oscar, the series will follow the story of Steven Grant, also known as Marc Spector. As a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, Spector becomes a conduit for Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god. In this space, he battles with demons both within himself and around him.
“He’s an obscure hero, and the things we’re dealing with are very different. But because it’s a limited series, rather than a movie, the pressure isn’t there to make sure the opening weekend is massive,” Issac told The Hollywood Reporter.
“We’re able to take more risks, to bring that experimental quality on a huge scale.”
There are rumors that Disney will release a new trailer for the limited series during Super Bowl LVI. While nothing has been confirmed, fans can still check out the show’s first official trailer before the series debuts in March.
