Kent Cruz Says Beating Gary Antuanne Russell Would ‘Mean Everything’

The super lightweight division is about to get a bit more interesting. Regis Prograis holds a 140-pound title, Teofimo Lopez recently gained a piece of the 140-pound pie and Rolando “Rolly” Romero also holds the distinction of being a world champion. Not to mention, undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney has said that he’d like to move up in weight while contenders like Jack Catterall, Richardson Hitchins and Brandun Lee continue to hang around. In the midst of that packed division, Gary Antuanne Russell holds the distinction of being the only super lightweight fighter to have stopped every opponent he has faced. On Saturday, August 12, he’ll return home to Maryland and attempt to extend his knockout streak with a win against Kent Cruz. However, the St. Louis-based fighter has other plans in mind. During a press conference in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Thursday, Cruz made it clear that he’s up for the challenge.

“Beating Russell would mean everything [to] me,” he told Brian Custer of Showtime.

“This is what [I’ve] been waiting on my whole career. [Competing against] a fighter like Russell in his backyard [will] bring the best out of me.”

Cruz is confident in his ability to take care of business, but his opponent is as well. In his own words, Russell plans to “put out” Cruz’s “fire” at the MGM National Harbor on Saturday.

“I was gone far too long [and] it feels good to be back,” he said on Thursday, August 10.

“Come fight night, I’m pretty sure he’s going to bring his physical best and I’m going to bring everything that I need to bring.”

Both men will put their unblemished record on the line at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Saturday, August 12.
