Just fresh off the unveiling of his new album title, To Pimp A Butterfly, and the albums accompanying cover, Rolling Stone unveils their newest cover featuring the L.A. rapper. Due out this Friday, Kendrick Lamar spoke with Rolling Stone in regards to some aspects of the album and it’s creation. He also previewed 6 new songs from the album in addition to the previously released ‘i’ and ‘The Blacker The Berry’. In the article, Rolling Stone details the album’s sound, from what they heard so far, along with Kendrick’s sound engineer, Derek “MixedByAli” Ali, mentioning that Mr. Lamar talks in colors.
Sonically, Lamar’s new album is adventurous, incorporating elements of funk, spoken-word poetry, and free-jazz, augmented by lots of live playing. (Lamar says he was listening to a lot of Miles Davis and Parliament while making it.) “It’s a unique sound,” says Sounwave. “Every producer I’ve ever met was sending me stuff [for the album], but there was a one-in-a-million chance you could send a beat that actually fit what we were doing.” Lamar’s longtime engineer, Derek “MixedByAli” Ali, says the rapper would often talk in moods: “He would say, ‘I want it to sound eerie,’ or ‘I want it to sound like you’re driving past something.’ Or he talks in colors: ‘Make it sound purple. Make it sound light green.’”
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Kendrick Lamar also makes mention that the album is “honest, fearful, and unapologetic.” As merely moments go by, the excitement increases for To Pimp A Butterfly. Here’s to March 23rd getting here as soon as possible!
