Kehlani has reportedly raised more than $500,000 for humanitarian efforts in Gaza, Sudan and Congo. On Friday, May 31, the Bay Area native released the second single, “Next 2 U,” from their upcoming album, Crash. As part of the song’s release, Kehlani launched a new line merch connected to the record. In return, Kehlani pledged to donate proceeds from the merchandise to humanitarian efforts in Gaza, Sudan and Congo. Two weeks later, they returned to let the world know just how much they were able to fundraise.
“‘Next 2 U’ capped out with over $555,000 raised. This song is about protection, something that institutions have failed to do for the people of Palestine, Congo, and Sudan. No one got us the way we got each other,” the “After Hours” singer wrote.
“[My team and I] feel overwhelmed with gratitude for [y’all] showing out for this fundraiser. We’re blessed to say we supported artists in the West Bank while raising money for families in Gaza, Sudan, and Congo. We’re blessed to say that we are supported by a community standing on business together.”
Not only did they fundraise for families in Gaza, but Kehlani’s “Next 2 U” video also opened with a quote from award-winning poet and author Hala Alyan. From there, the video also featured Palestinian flags and keffiyeh-inspired clothing.
“Next 2 U,” “After Hours” and Kehlani’s latest album, Crash, will arrive on Friday, June 21.
