What a difference a year makes. If you’re Jussie Smollett, that saying is surely ringing true in his life right now. This time last year, millions across the United States found themselves starting to fall victim to what would become one of television’s most talked about shows for months to come. Premiering in January of 2015, “Empire” has went on to set and break ratings records week after week and is now holding on strong as season 2 is well underway. For Jussie Smollett and his fellow cast mates, along with their lives changing, the musical drama has brought about many perks, praise, and accolades due to the show’s success. Those things continue on for Jussie as he is set to be honored at this year’s NAACP Awards. Along with eight others, Mr. Smollett will find himself being the recipient of the NAACP Chairman’s Award at this year’s 47th annual award show, as reported by Deadline.com.
“It is a rare privilege for me to present the NAACP Chairman’s 2016 Award to an outstanding group of trailblazing leaders all under the age of 50 who have given voice and vision to the mantra that black lives matter,” said Roslyn Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors. “The five individuals and three organizations have raised awareness of social, educational, and economic injustice from college campuses, church pulpits and the streets, and exemplify what this award symbolizes: ‘Courage Will Not Skip this Generation.’”
A true honor, “Empire” and all of those involved are without a doubt on a winning streak at the moment. With no signs of slowing down, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if more honors and awards are set in stone for more cast members in the near future. Be sure to tune in to the NAACP Awards on February 5th at 9/8c on TV One.
