The New Orleans Saints may have avoided their short term salary cap issues. Galette’s $12.5 million dollar roster bonus will now be spread across the rest of his 5 year contract. The move is beneficial for both sides. The Saints now gain an additional $10 million in salary cap space. The Saints were in major cap issues two weeks ago and may now be crawling their way out of trouble. For Galette the move turns the $12.5 million dollar roster bonus into guaranteed money that will spread across 5 seasons. The roster bonus is considered to be non guaranteed if Galette were to be released.
The Saints also recently released inside linebacker Curtis Lofton to gain additional cap space. The moves will clear $4.5 million off the books. David Hawthorne, Ben Grubbs, Jahri Evans, and Corey White are among players who could still either be released or candidates to restructure deals. Marcus Colston and Broderick Bunkley have already restructured their deals in a similar fashion to Galette. With or without Junior the Saints will still be in the market for more defensive players. The Saints are likely to go with a corner or pass rusher with the 13th overall pick in the NFL draft.
