The Chicago White Sox continue to build together their team that they see best fit for the imminent future of the organization. The White Sox have reportedly agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract extension with José Abreu who already was returning to the organization on the $17.5 million qualifying offer he accepted earlier this offseason. Jeff Passan of ESPN tweeted out that the two sides had agreed on this extension.
Rather than the expected $17.8M qualifying-offer salary, Jose Abreu will receive a $5M signing bonus and $11M salary in 2020. He’ll make $16M in 2021 and $18M in 2022 per the terms of his new three-year, $50M deal. He also has full no-trade clause in 2020 and limited one in 2021.

The White Sox recently agreed to terms of a four-year contract with catcher Yasmani Grandal that has hopefully brought the team closer to a point where they can make it to the postseason. In 2019, Abreu managed a .284/.330/.503 slash with 33 home runs and 123 RBI for the White Sox. Abreu looks to maintain his veteran and leadership role with a younger team that is finally coming into its own, within the division, hoping to take that next step and compete in the playoffs once more.
With Abreu’s new extension, take a more in-depth look at the free agents still available at the first base position with other teams like the Detroit Tigers, possibly in the mix for one. This may not have been a true free agent signing, but the White Sox have shown that they ultimately want to compete, and they want to compete now.
