Though this 2017-18 NBA campaign has been a frustrating one for Washington Wizards point guard John Wall, brighter things seem to be on the horizon. Not only is he inching towards a return from the knee surgery he underwent, but the 27-year-old has some big plans for the summer, a time that will now be laced with academic aspirations.
According to Washington Post’s Candace Buckner, Wall hopes to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree from where his basketball career first erupted: The University of Kentucky.
John Wall plans to return to college.
Over the NBA All-Star Weekend, Wall shared his summer plans to return to the University of Kentucky to pursue his bachelor’s degree. Although Wall has cemented himself in the league as a five-time all-star, he wants to prepare for life after basketball.
Though a college education goes a long way post-basketball career, there are also bigger reasons behind John Wall making this decision.
Wall says he promised his father before his death that he would earn his college degree and now, he sees the perfect time to fulfill that pledge.
“I’m going back to school this summer to get my business degree,” Wall revealed. “That’s what I’m focusing on. I promised my dad that.”
Wall’s father passed away eight years ago when his son was directly on the cusp of NBA stardom. Going back to college to fulfill a vow for someone who played that big of a role in his life is an easy decision for one of the league’s most intelligent players.
Wall’s return to his old collegiate stomping grounds will certainly be inspiring for future generations to understand that education is important no matter the circumstances. Wall spent only his freshman year at Kentucky, where he was recently inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame, before being selected first overall by Washington in the 2010 NBA Draft.
