The sport of boxing is hitting its stride as the temperature rises and the sun shines. This weekend, Ryan Garcia will meet Gervonta “Tank” Davis at T-Mobile Arena. Just a few weeks later, Vasyl Lomachenko will challenge Devin Haney in Sin City. Not to mention, Rolando Romero will seek out his first world title in mid-May while Teofimo Lopez prepares for a 140-pound title fight with Josh Taylor in June. With all of that going on, no one can overlook Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s homecoming bout in Mexico on May 6, 2023. Having earned one of the top spots on every pound-for-pound list, Alvarez heads into the bout as a heavy betting favorite. If he emerges with the win, he could fight David Benavidez or Dmitry Bivol in September. However, Alvarez’s opponent, John Ryder, is eager to spoil all of those plans with an upset victory.
“I’ve seen him mention Bivol and (David) Benavidez,” Ryder told Boxing Scene.
“Don’t sleep on me. The only rematch you’re having in September is with me at the Emirates.”
John Ryder enters next month’s bout with a record of 32-5 with 18 knockouts. Ryder and Alvarez do share a handful of common opponents, including Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs. Against those four common opponents, Alvarez is 4-0 while Ryder is 1-3. Fortunately, Ryder’s confidence is at an all-time high after winning 9 of his first 11 bouts since moving up to super middleweight. The U.K. fighter will put it all on the line of May 6, 2023 as he stands toe-to-toe with Alvarez in Mexico.
