After the New Year, the ‘Road to Wrestlemania’ officially begins in the wrestling world of the WWE. As of late, that means some part time former stars return to make surprise appearances and the company pulls out all the stops to entertain their fans. In years past it means ‘shocking’ appearances from The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. It’s a ploy to get you back watching a few more episodes of Raw while also introducing you to some new blood.
One constant since Wrestlemania 20 in 2004 has been John Cena. Whether the leader of the ‘C-Nation’ fought for a main title or just had a match to continue a storyline, John Cena has been on the Wrestlemania card in one way or another. From Wrestlemania 21 until Wrestlemania 29 Cena was either the main event or co-main event for the biggest wrestling show of the year going up against talents like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Batista and The Rock over that time.
So you would expect for Wrestlemania 32, which is expected to have the biggest crowd in Wrestlemania history, for John Cena to be there. Well, that was the plan for the WWE, until he got hurt. John Cena will miss 6-9 months, including Wrestlemania, with a torn rotator cuff.
According to PWInsider.com, Cena suffered a torn rotator cuff and he will indeed miss WrestleMania 32 as a result of the surgery he requires.
Cena confirmed the news on twitter.
Rather upside down start to 2016 as tomorrow I will head to Birmingham for shoulder surgery. Life's full of set backs but #nevergiveup
— John Cena (@JohnCena) January 7, 2016
Cena now joins top flight WWE performers in Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and Antonio Cesaro who are all expected to miss Wrestlemania 32 due to injury with Orton, Cesaro and Cena all suffering similar shoulder injuries. If his injury is similar to Randy Orton’s, and that’s the early indication, the 6-9 month recovery time seems appropriate but then again, this is Cena we’re talking about. He’s come back sooner than anticipated and performed at a high level for the company.
As the WWE looks to pack 100,000 people into Cowboys Stadium (aka ‘Jerry World’) in Arlington, Texas, the list of hurt superstars could be damaging to the product. WWE now features a multitude of talent on the shelf including Cena, Orton, Cesaro, Rollins, Sting and they are still without Daniel Bryan.
Who knows now what could happen at Wrestlemania 32.
