UCLA came to Kentucky asking for permission to talk with John Calipari about becoming their next basketball coach. Kentucky was never truly worried and granted access for the Bruins and Calipari to talk. Calipari was promptly offered a six-year 48 million dollar contract to become the next head basketball coach of UCLA.
This came just a day after Kentucky lost in the Elite Eight to Auburn. Marking the fourth straight year Calipari fell short of the Final Four after making it four of his first seven years at the school. In return the Wildcats offered Calipari a lifetime contract to remain at Kentucky. Calipari signed that deal this afternoon making it likely he finishes his career at the school.
Kentucky spokesman confirms to @Stadium John Calipari agrees to a long-term deal with the school to “finish his career at Kentucky.” There was NO shot Cal was ever going to UCLA. Only way he leaves UK is for an NBA job — and it would have to be a good NBA job.

The deal includes an extension on his current contract that was set to run through 2024. On top of that it also includes a role as a paid administrator at the school once he’s done coaching.
Calipari has taken Kentucky to another level since he’s been at the school. Continually courting top five teams outside of a few down years. The school and Calipari are a great fit for each other with Calipari’s colorful personality matching well with the school’s rabid fan base. The pair are now expected to be together for many years to come after the rumors every offseason of the coach leaving the school for new pastures.
