After being drafted 48th overall by the Bengals in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mixon was headed into the last season on his four-year rookie deal. Mixon has certainly earned this most recent payday and has now been compensated as one of the top backs in the NFL.
Following an injury-riddled 2017 rookie season, Mixon has bounced back nicely and produced back to back 1,000-yard campaigns in 2018 and 2019. In a Cincinnati offense devoid of many weapons, Mixon has proven to be a capable workhorse and has now joined Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffery as backs to earn a substantial extension this offseason.
However, Mixon will have even more opportunity to thrive moving forward with top pick Joe Burrow now at the helm for the Bengals. Burrow put together a historic season in his final year with LSU and comes to Cincinnati with high expectations. If Burrow’s success can translate directly to the NFL, the Bengals could all of a sudden feature one of the more promising high-powered offenses in the AFC.
