On Monday, July 7, 2025, University of Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione reportedly retired. According to ESPN, he “initiated the conversation about his retirement” with the university nearly a month ago.
Twenty-seven years into his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, Joe Castiglione is the longest-tenured athletic director in major college sports. During his time in Norman, Oklahoma, Castiglione has helped the Sooners win 26 national titles and 117 league titles. He was also head of the athletic department as it transitioned into the Southeastern Conference (SEC) last year. Along the way, he won the Sports Journal’s Athletic Director of the Year award in 2009 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics’ top athletic director award in 2000 and 2018.
Joe Castiglione will remain in Norman as the Athletic Director Emeritus while the university searches for its next athletic director. He will continue to work on “special projects” with the university and remain in the Norman area.
