Joanne Anderson has made history overseas. According to the BBC, Anderson has just become the first Black woman to be elected mayor of a major British city. She earned title of mayor of Liverpool by gaining 59.2% of the popular vote during a second round of voting this week. Anderson will replace Joe Anderson, who recently stepped down due to legal issues.
“Liverpool has always been a city of firsts – one that does things differently and that charters its own path,” Anderson said after making history in the United Kingdom.
“Today is the beginning of the fresh start we all want and need.”
Moving forward, Anderson hopes she restore trust within the city. In her words, this is the first step along a “restorative path after a difficult year.”
“I have always held an unshakeable sense of justice and this is one of the reasons I have stood for the role,” she said.
“I am wholeheartedly determined to put our city on a restorative path after a difficult year.”
