While America mourns the aftermath of the latest school shooting, Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt has announced he will foot the bill for the funerals of the ten victims. The ten victims included eight students and two substitute teachers of Sante Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas.
The town in which the shooting took place is located along Texas’ Gulf of Mexico border and about forty miles southeast of Houston. Watt also was a prominent figure and major source of donations (about $37 million) towards recovery effort after the Houston area was ravaged by Hurricane Harvey in September 2017.
Watt’s team, the Houston Texans, released the following statement regarding the shooting:
“On behalf of the Texans organization, we are saddened by the tragic events at Sante Fe High School this morning and extend our thoughts and heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families and all those affected. We are grateful for the brave first responders, law enforcement officials and medical personnel. The Texans family will continue to pray for our neighbors.”
The Houston Texans drafted JJ Watt out of the University of Wisconsin in 2011. Since then, he has been one of the most dominant players – regardless of position – in professional football. However, he’s experienced some health setbacks. Including a tibial plateau fracture to his left leg that kept him out for much of last season. An injury he’s still working his way back from. He is, however, expected to be ready for the start of the 2018 season.
Santa Fe area police have identified the shooter, who remains in police custody. The shooter entered the school early last Friday morning armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun and .38 revolver. Along with the ten left dead, the shooting also left 13 people, including a police officer, injured as a result.
