In a surprising move, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a restructured one-year deal. Instead of being traded or being released, the veteran will be on the team this year as the backup. The deal will pay him a base salary of $6.5 million fully guaranteed. This deal includes playtime bonuses that could boost the contract to $16 million. Included in this new deal are a no-trade clause and a no-tag clause. Garoppolo will be an unrestricted free agent in 2023 after serving as the backup to Trey Lance for one season.

With a reduced base salary, it is likely teams will be more interested in trading for the veteran quarterback this season. Now with the no-trade clause, Jimmy Garoppolo would have to agree to head to the team this season. It could be argued that the San Francisco 49ers have the best backup quarterback in the NFL. Time will tell if it is going to stay like that for the entire season.
